Workshop Description

A common refrain from editors and agents is that they’re looking for character-driven narration, but what does that mean exactly? This craft workshop is geared toward fiction writers looking to understand how characters come alive on the page. You will learn how interiority can and should include the unique and messy ways we process the real world. Whether you’re a beginner, on your first draft, revising a manuscript, or just want a refresher, join this class to learn how to how use your characters to fuel the engine of your plot. We’ll look at examples from beloved writers as well as some generative time to put your learnings into practice.

What you'll learn

  • what agents and editors mean by “character-driven narration,” and why it matters

  • how to write interiority that feels specific, human, and alive on the page

  • techniques for revealing character through thought, perception, and emotional response

  • how to use detail and observation to deepen characterization

  • how to apply these techniques to your own work through guided writing exercises

What's included

  • a guided craft lecture on character-driven narration and interiority

  • close reading and discussion of excerpts from published authors

  • generative writing prompts and dedicated time to write during the session

  • practical techniques you can apply immediately to your own fiction

  • opportunities to ask questions and engage in discussion

  • a supportive, intimate workshop environment at Atelier Dalal

What you'll take home

  • new pages or exercises generated during the workshop

  • tools to make your characters feel more specific, complex, and alive

  • clear strategies to use character as the driving force of plot

  • creative momentum and greater confidence in your writing process

  • a stronger foundation to continue developing your current draft or begin new work
